Jon Bon Jovi has gotten the internet all astir after recounting a tale about Bono’s childhood – one that is a little murky on the facts.
Speaking to Dax Shepherd on his Armchair Expert podcast, the Bon Jovi frontman made some fairly out-there remarks about Bono’s childhood – claiming that he was once beaten up by Orangemen.
Chatting about his own upbringing and the challenges involved in song-writing, particularly those with a political element, the singer commented on how different experiences lead to different types of music.
“Bono is probably right at my age, he’s a couple of months older I think. His upbringing was obviously very different than mine.
“I never had the Orangemen walking through my neighbourhood saying, you know, get the Catholic kid and beat him up.
“You know I didn’t have any of that kind of turmoil in suburban New Jersey when you had a wonderful middle-class upbringing with two hard-working parents. So, of course, you’re writing the happy anthemic song.”
Sounds like one of two things could have happened here – either this is a classic case of Chinese whispers or Bono has been telling tall tales to his famous pals.

Bono must have been telling Bon Jovi the kind of yarns about Ireland students on J1s told to try and get a bigger tip. https://t.co/X2LXJ8jzsV

Idea for a television programme. Bono, Jon Bon Jovi and myself drive around Dublin in search of the Orangemen who beat up Bono as a child. And we'd do it in a lovely old Vauxhall Nova. pic.twitter.com/EXhIJxKz1S
