You’re Some Mug: the most Irish mugs to ever exist and you’re going to want them all

Sarah Finnan

We all know someone who would love one of these.

The brainchild of 21-year old Alana Flaherty from Galway, You’re Some Mug is already making waves in the City of Tribes.

A commerce student at NUIG, Alana has taken this year out to work. Wanting to make the most of the year before returning to college in September she decided to set up her own business and “see what it’s all about”.

Hoping to own her own coffee shop someday, mugs were naturally the first steppingstone and so a new business venture was born.

Bright yellow in colour, there are five different versions of the mugs available.

And you’re going to want them all.

Slogans include “divil a bit”, “lob the gob” (absolutely gas), “any craic?”, and “ahh go on you’ll stay for another?”.

My personal favourite though has to be “now your sucking diesel” – partly because it’s my dad’s catchphrase, and partly because of the story behind it.

The more eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed a spelling error in the word “your”, and though small, it’s actually made the biggest impact out of all the styles.

Telling Lovin that it was a complete accident, Alana said:

“I was devastated when I realised I made the mistake, but really thought deep into how I could market and sell it. I really didn’t want to ignore the mistake or throw out all of that particular mug.

I then came up with the idea to donate the proceeds to the Dyslexia Association of Ireland in order to highlight my mistake.”

The error has garnered the young entrepreneur, who is actually dyslexic herself, high praise.

Adding: “I was so overwhelmed with the feedback and I really do think it was a blessing in disguise that I made that error”, Alana says that it’s now the mug she’s most proud of.

Placing it at eye level in each shop it retails in, she’s owning the typo and using her platform to give back to the community.

Currently only selling in Galway-in Ground and Co, Baby Ground and Co, Mr Waffle and Delight Café –but watch this space because I predict big things.

Make sure to pick one up on your next outing to the Christmas market.

Now shtick on the kettle will ya? I’m parched.
