Billie Eilish’s new music video has us wishing we were cooler in our youth

Fiona Frawley

No surprise, the new video from Billie Eilish is effortlessly slick. Her and a group of pals looking class, all coordinated in Skims-type outfits, playing Twister, spraying each other in slo mo with silly string and having the craic.

We’re not afraid to admit it. Billie is cooler than us. We shudder to think of a camera on our group of mates at 19 years old (cut to us lashing on the Sally Hansen with a fluffy sock, taking baths in Lynx Africa and frantically trying to get on the cheap list for a “beach party” which, at the very least we’ll be walking out of with a verruca or two). Sure she’s rich, lives in Hollywood and has a team of professionals carefully coordinating the video. But even if an Irish group of mates had all that, you just know someone would end up in A&E after getting silly string in the eye and having an allergic reaction, or unable to finish a game of Twister without getting their feet tangled up in the bottom of their O’Neills (hey it’s okay, Paul Mescal made them cool again).

Yes, we’re a bit cringe. When you picture Irish teenagers having a sesh, it’s more getting sick in a field than dancing on a balcony with your mates looking class. Think Derry Girls with their hair moussed for the gods doing the Saturday Night dance, or lads drinking a questionable mix of alcohol out of a trophy after winning the county final.

There’s no doubt about it, Billie pulls off what we never could. Not one of her friends looks like the type who’d elect themselves as the one who befriends the parents and puts all the empty cans and bottles in a bin bag. But sure is there any question of where the craic would be better? To conclude, Hup Billie and Hup the teens of Ireland.
