Love is most certainly in the air down in The Faithful County where one elderly Offaly couple recently tied the knot – 40 years after they first met.
Local man John Bermingham (86) and his long-time partner Mary Long (83) proved that true love has no expiration date, putting their glad rags on and heading down to the Tullamore Health Centre yesterday to be wed.
Not letting current level five restrictions get in the way of their plans, the ceremony was organised by John’s daughter Carolyn who also attended the ceremony with her husband and twin daughters.

The second time for both John and Mary to tie the knot, the pair had wanted to get married for quite some time but had trouble with the paperwork rigmarole. Speaking to RTÉ, Carolyn said:
“They’re old and I knew they wanted to do this. Nowadays everything is online and on the internet and they just couldn’t manage it. They were overwhelmed by the whole bureaucracy of it and they found it very impersonal.”
Organising the ceremony with thanks to the marriage registration service, the day went without fault but not without a hitch as John and Mary can finally say that they are very happily married.
