Since it’s release in 1994, the anthemic Zombie by The Cranberries has been a staple for drunken Irish expats to belt out on karaoke nights across the globe.
Widely regarded as the Limerick band’s most famous hit, the anti-war song’s popularity has never really dwindled as the generations have passed and it’s set to receive a spike in airplay after being featured on Eminem’s new album Revival.
Coming in at track number 17 on the album, Slim Shady fans would be forgiven for thinking there was something wrong when his usual angst-ridden raps are suddenly replaced with the calming tones of Dolores O’Riordan.
While remixes and samples of classic songs often fall a bit by the wayside, something about this one just works. In Your Head, named after the opening line of the iconic chorus from Zombie, has been described by Pitchfork as a “delicately morose guitar melody which suits Eminem’s flow perfectly—even if the hook was pretty much cut and pasted from the original.”
The song finds Eminem solemnly reflecting on past family issues, a topic which usually sees him deliver his best stuff. While it might not appeal to fans of old-school Marshall Mathers or hip-hop cynics, it’s a more than decent blend of his lyrical talents and some air guitar fare which The Cranberries are so famous for.
