It’s Groundhog Day so one TV channel is screening the movie back-to-back all day

James Fenton

Even though every day has felt like Groundhog Day for nearly a year, the actual North American celebration falls today, February 2.

Groundhog Day derives from the superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and see its shadow due to a clear day, it will go back in and winter will last for six more weeks. On the other hand, if cloudy weather means it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.

The last thing we need is a long winter so let’s hope the little guy doesn’t spot its shadow or miserable weather for the whole of February. In any case, Sky Comedy is offering up the perfect schedule for the day that’s in it, screening 1993 comedy movie Groundhog Day back-to-back for the whole day.

Viewers can watch Bill Murray in his much-loved role throughout the day, with the first screening starting this morning at 10.35am following by repeated viewings at 12.30pm, 2.25pm, 4.20pm, 6.10pm, 8pm, 9.45pm and 11.30pm.

Basically, if you leave Sky Comedy on all day, you won’t miss a minute. The station has been doing this on February 2 for a few years now and if anything, you have to admire their commitment to the gag.

If you’re a fan of the movie, that’s your plan for the day sorted.
