Brace yourselves… The Garth Brooks gigs are coming

Fiona Frawley

At least, that’s what is says on Twitter.

Last night, the people of Ireland were involuntarily transported back to the summer of 2014 and the now infamous Five in a Row Fiasco. It’s pretty much on the JC history curriculum at this stage so I’m sure you know the story.

When Garth Brooks announced his comeback tour for that summer, Irish demand for tickets was so high that five nights were organised at Croke Park – the first five night run in the venues history. Shortly after this, Dublin City Council announced they’d only grant a license for three performances, which displeased Garth. Maybe he didn’t mean to cause a big scene but his refusal to play any less than five shows resulted no gigs at all going ahead, hundreds of thousands of tickets being refunded and a cowboy hat shaped chip on the shoulders of people across the country.

So you can imagine our terror when we heard whisperings, then louder proclamations of Garth’s potential return.

Gavan Reilly, as usual, was here for us with the goss first. Virgin Media News later broke the news that “negotiations are at an advanced stage” to bring Garth back for a series of 2022 gigs. No official confirmation has been made as of yet but that didn’t stop Irish Twitter embarking on a downward spiral. Here are some of the highlights:

Will you be dusting off your cowboy hat and getting in line for a ticket?
