For a character who appeared in one 25-minute episode to become one of Ireland’s most iconic comic creations is quite a feat.
But therein lies the charm of roguish Father Damo Lennon who was played so brilliantly by Joe Rooney in the 1996 Father Ted episode ‘Old Grey Whistle Theft’.Â
The character was at the centre of the hilarious Whistlegate scandal which engulfed Craggy Island after the disappearance of, you’ve guessed it, a whistle.Â
Damo’s bratty demeanour appealed to Father Ted viewers of all ages and people haven’t forgotten his rib-tickling one-liners which appear to be repeated on a daily basis even in 2017:
