James Fenton

What do you get when you cross the alluring charm of Mark Wahlberg with the incredible acting talents of Christian Bale? Only one of the best movies to come out of Hollywood in recent years an lucky for us RTÉ are showing it tonight.

The Fighter tells the real-life story of Irish-American boxer Micky Ward (Wahlberg) who is trained and managed by his drug addict half-brother Dicky Eklund (Bale). Ward’s relationship with new girlfriend Charlene, played by Amy Adams, serves as a source of tension between him and his family of seven sisters as well as his mother.

Bale is incredible as Eklund, the man who helps Ward get his career back on track and even lost a hell of a lot of weight in order to capture his subject’s frail appearance. His  performance secured an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor while Melissa Leo picked up Best Supporting Actress for her role as the mother of both boxers.

The Fighter is definitely worth checking out and airs on RTÉ 2 tonight at 9pm. Check out the trailer below.
