The seven best movies on TV on the first Friday night of lockdown

James Fenton

So, here we are back in lockdown. There’s a good chance you’ve completed Netflix already so it’s time to find out about some of the best movies on TV this evening.

It’s the first Friday night of Lockdown 2.0 and with Covid-19 restrictions in place, as well as a storm a brewing, it’s a night for the sofa – whether we like it or not. Here’s what’s on offer in terms of movies on TV this evening.

The Bourne Identity – 9pm – Virgin Media One

Long before Matt Damon became the darling of Dalkey, he was starring in the much-loved Bourne series. This one is the original and if it’s action you’re after tonight then look no further.

Ghostbusters – 9pm – E4

The 2016 female-led reboot starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig.

Unless – 9.40pm – RTE 2

Unless what? Exactly. Catherine Keener stars in this drama directed by Dubliner Alan Gilsenan.

The Last Hard Men – TG4 – 10pm

No it’s not about the lads who used to throw shapes around the schoolyard. This one is a 1976 western starring Charlton Heston.

Sausage Party – 11.20pm – Comedy Central

An animated comedy written by Seth Rogen (who also stars) and Evan Goldberg. Make sure the kids (or your parents) have gone to bed for this one.

Mermaids – 11.25pm – RTE One

Otherwise known as the movie with The Shoop Shoop Song in it. It’s a bit of a classic and Cher’s a legend so you may as well.

Get On Up -11.30pm – Channel 4

A biopic of James Brown starring the late Chadwick Boseman.
