These are the five best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Rom-coms, epic action, and Oscar-winning dramas are all available tonight.

Thursday is upon us, and what better way to celebrate Weekend Eve (kind of) than by sitting in and watching one of these very fine movies.

Or watch more than one, we’re not here to tell you how to live your life. We’re just here to tell you which of tonight’s movies are the best.

The Searchers – BBC Four – 8pm

This 1956 western stars John Wayne as an American Civil War veteran who embarks on a several-year-long journey to rescue his niece from the Comanches.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – FilmFour – 9pm

Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell both won Oscars for their performances in this dark comedy drama about a grieving mother who rents the aforementioned billboards to call out the lack of work done by local police in finding the killer of her young daughter.

Along Came Polly – Comedy Central – 9pm

A pleasant enough rom-com starring Ben Stiller as a particularly anal, stuck-up sort who finds himself falling in love with the entirely free-spirited Polly, played by Jennifer Aniston at the height of her Friends fame.

Face/Off – ITV4 – 10.10pm

John Travolta is the cop who undergoes face-swapping surgery with terrorist Nic Cage in order to take down his organisation from the inside. Things don’t go according to plan with Cage wakes up from his coma, puts on Travolta’s face, and begins to live his “lawful” life. A bonkers, OTT action-thriller that we absolutely love to bits.

Seven Psychopaths – FilmFour – 11.15pm

Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, and more star in this comedy crime thriller about a screenwriter and his best friend who kidnaps the dog (dognaps?) owned by a notorious gangster. This was the movie that writer/director Martin McDonagh made after In Bruges and before Three Billboards.
