These are the ten best movies on TV for your Valentine’s night in

Rory Cashin

Yes, there are some rom-coms, but yes, there are plenty of other genres on tonight, too.

If you’re leaning into the Valentine’s mood, then you’ll be happy to hear that the TV overlords have put on a fair amount of romantic comedies tonight.

If you’re not, then you’ll be happy to hear there are plenty of non-rom-coms, too.

Kung Fu Panda 2 – E4 – 7.10pm

Despite making nearly $700 million at the box office, KFP2 is still one of the most under-appreciated animated movies of recent years, with the top-tier voice cast bringing their A-game to a hilarious and, at times, heartbreaking story of an adopted panda being reunited with his birth parents.

Along Came Polly – Comedy Central – 7.20pm

Ben Stiller is the uptight insurance agent, Jennifer Aniston is the free-spirited object of his affections. It shouldn’t work, but this a Hollywood romantic comedy, so of course it is going to work.

The Bodyguard – RTE Two – 9pm

Whitney Houston is the global megastar who finds herself being targeted by a terrifying stalker, so she hires a bodyguard (Kevin Costner), and the two slowly begin to fall in love.

Love, Simon – FilmFour – 9pm

Nick Robinson stars as Simon, a high-schooler attempting to discover the identity of the boy in his class that he has fallen in love with online, while also trying to remain in the closet. A very cute rom-com-dram.

Happy Gilmore – ITV4 – 9pm

The movie that introduced most of the world to Adam Sandler, here playing a hockey player with anger problems who finds he can channel that temper into becoming a world class golfer.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – MTV – 9pm

The second of the four Hunger Games movies (and the best of the bunch) sees Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) forced back into the Hunger Games competition as a way to distract the population from a mounting rebellion.

The Pursuit of Happyness – E! Entertainment – 9pm

Will Smith was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for this tear-jerking drama, based on the true story of a year in the life of a homeless salesman attempting to build a new life for him and his son, here played by Smith’s real life son Jaden.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith – FilmFour – 11.15pm

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play the married couple, each one of them secretly one of the best assassins in the world, and all hell breaks loose when the truth finally comes out. Watch it ahead of the imminent remake.

About A Boy – Comedy Central – 11.20pm

Hugh Grant, Toni Collette, Rachel Weisz, and a young Nicholas Hoult star in this comedy-drama about a bachelor and a young boy striking up a unique friendship, and helping each other grow up along the way.

Only The Brave – Channel 4 – 12.05am

Josh Brolin, James Badge Dale, Jeff Bridges, Miles Teller, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Hardy, Andie MacDowell, and Jennifer Connelly star in this true story of a group of firefighters attempting to control one of the biggest blazes in American history.
