This 2-Minute Clip From Louis Theroux’s ‘My Scientology Movie’ Is Fascinating

Louis Theroux released a clip from his new documentary My Scientology Movie yesterday, and it’ll whet your appetite for the full thing.

The above video features an encounter outside the Scientology base in Hemet, California. Theroux travelled there with Andrew Perez, the actor who plays David Miscavige in the film. Things got heated when a couple of Sea Org members (an order of Scientology’s most dedicated adherents) came to see what the filmmakers were up to…

Theroux has been trying to make the documentary about the controversial religion for more than 10 years, hoping to tell its story with nuance and understanding, but he was denied access at every turn.

In the end, the documentarian made the film using reenactments of pivotal moments in the church’s history. During the making of the documentary, Theroux found himself followed by Scientologist film crews, filming their own movie about him.
