With Oscar wins and TIME magazine nods, Irish films have been killing it internationally this year, and this Darren Thornton masterpiece seems to be following the same route.
A Date For Mad Mary tells the story of ‘Mad’ Mary McArdle (Seána Kerslake) returning to Drogheda after a short stint in prison. Upon returning home, she quickly realises that everything and everyone has changed. Her best mate, Charlene (Charleigh Bailey), is about to get married and Mary is maid of honour.
When Charlene refuses Mary a ‘plus one’ on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary becomes determined to prove her wrong. Her attempts at dating are comical, relatable and quite frankly, a disaster, and she winds up feeling more alone than ever. Until she meets Jess, that is.
Thornton’s debut feature, the film follows his hugely acclaimed short film Frankie and the IFTA award-winning Love is the Drug.
A Date For Mad Mary is set for Irish release on September 2.
