WATCH: This Clip Of Ireland v Wales Is Said To Be To World’s Oldest Football Footage

James Fenton

Irish eyes the world over will be transfixed tonight when the Boys in Green take on Wales at the Aviva Stadium.

Through laptops, social media and international broadcasts, Ireland will be cheered on along with approximately 50,000 people in the stadium.

It’s a far cry from this clip of the two nations going head to head in 1906 which is said to be the oldest surviving footage of an international football match.

Filmed at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham by the Mitchell and Kenyon film company, it depicts a simpler era of the beautiful game and it’s fascinating to be able to compare it to the today’s fast-paced sport that we all know.

We wonder if Martin O’Neill will be referring to the clip for ideas on how to tame the Welsh tonight?
