Goats help clear weeds for this Cork city school

Katy Thornton

And they’re doing a fine job!

Coláiste Chríost Rí in Cork has welcomed a group of goats to help with their weed situation. The school’s playing field is overrun with weeds and scrub, and the goats act as a sustainable and natural way to clear it. Only last month we saw goats at Howth doing something very similar.

RTÉ News wrote the idea came from West Cork man William Walsh and his ‘Rent a Billy Goat’ scheme. The goal is to avoid using harsh chemicals on the land, and the goats are a great solution to this problem. They naturally eat the weeds anyway, so for them it’s just another meal.

The goats have a range of interesting names. Walsh told RTÉ News that they go by: “Hydra, Medusa, Nibbles, Buzz, Pythagorus, Camera, Spike, Hercules and Sona.” An added bonus is the students at Coláiste Chríost Rí love their nine new friends, and there’s been a buzz around the school since they arrived.

This seems like a great solution and best of all the goats are happy with the arrangement too!
