Yesterday, pubs all across Ireland took to social media to demand Government assistance. Part of a nationwide campaign, publicans were calling for “support not sympathy” – asking Government to put proper measures in place to help those who are struggling given the current circumstances.
Marking the five-month anniversary of being closed, over 3,500 pubs still remain shut with no signs of that changing anytime soon. Thousands of business owners, pub workers and their families stepped out in solidarity with one another, flooding social media timelines with images of them, their pubs and their staff.
Overwhelmed by the show of support, Mellett’s Emporium described it as “a really special day”. Also sharing a video of some of the people and parties that they’re missing at the minute, the team took to Twitter to write:
“A really special day for pubs all over Ireland. 3500 publicans, 25000 bar staff & all our suppliers hopefully feeling a little less abandoned tonight. Here’s the faces we really miss, the parties, the lads, the fun behind the bar. Please give us #SupportNotSympathy @LeoVaradkar”
