New Irish sitcom ‘Frank of Ireland’ starts on Channel 4 tonight

James Fenton

Following in the footsteps of some big Irish-produced comedies, new sitcom Frank of Ireland makes its debut on Channel 4 tonight.

Co-written by and starring Brian and Domhnall Gleeson, Frank of Ireland follows the lives of two best friends navigating single life in Dublin and the six-part series gets underway tonight. Brian and Domhnall, both of whom are sons of Brendan Gleeson, play Frank and Doofus respectively, with the cast filled out by Sarah Greene as Frank’s ex Áine and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as her new boyfriend.

Channel 4 and Irish-produced sitcoms have been great bedfellows over the years, with 1990 ecclesiastical comedy Father Ted enjoying iconic status on both sides of the Irish Sea, before the success of Derry Girls a couple of decades later.

It will be interesting to see if the Gleesons can pull off a similar level of critical and viewer acclaim and you can judge for yourself when the first episode of Frank of Ireland airs on Channel 4 at 10pm.While the show is an Amazon Prime original, it won’t be available to view on the platform in Ireland.
