These are the seven best movies on TV tonight

James Fenton

It’s a Monday of mixed feelings – on the bright side, there seems to be some sort of big yellow ball in the sky shining down on us.

On the other hand, it is still Monday but some some high quality movies on TV will help you feel better about that.

After weeks of frankly awful weather, the sun has decided to make its first appearance of 2021 today. With the grand stretch in the evening now growing every day, there might even be an opportunity to get out for a walk after work. Crazy, right?

After all that long overdue fresh air you’ll need to unwind and in that regard, there are plenty of movies on TV to help you do that tonight. Here’s a selection of the best…

Daddy’s Home 2 – Film4 – 6.55pm

An early evening screening of this fairly ridiculous (but admit it… kinda funny) 2017 sequel. John Lithgow and Mel Gibson join the cast of the original movie as the fathers of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s respective characters.

San Andreas – Sky One – 9pm

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. An earthquake in Los Angeles. That is all.

Couples Retreat – Comedy Central – 9pm

A 2009 comedy that includes Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis among its cast.

Cobra – ITV4 – 9pm

Sylvester Stallone. A hostage crisis. That is all.

A Quiet Place – Film4 – 9pm

A critically-acclaimed 2018 horror starring husband and wife team John Krasinski and Emily Blunt.

Dallas Buyers Club – TG4 – 9.30pm

The 2013 movie based on the remarkable life of AIDS patient Ron Woodruff. This one bagged Oscars for both Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey so it’s bound to be alright, alright, alright.

Carlito’s Way – ITV4 – 10.50pm

A 1993 crime drama starring Al Pacino and Sean Penn.
