One Of The Best Irish Movies Of Recent Years Is On TV Tonight

James Fenton

Ireland has a history of producing great movies and while it’s hard to pick out the best, not many would argue with this list we compiled in the past.

Of course, most of the stuff we write is bordering on perfect but when gathering the aforementioned collection, we probably left one or two gems out. What are ya gonna do?

One recent flick that could definitely lay claim to being included is the wonderfully-titled A Date For Mad Mary, a 2016 comedy/drama starring Seána Kerslake of Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope Fame.

The film revolves around “Mad” Mary McArdle (Kerslake) who has recently been released from a young offender’s institute and is living back home in Drogheda. With her best friend’s wedding coming up, the race is on for Mary to find a date as she struggles to reconnect with her family and friends.

Receiving critical acclaim upon its release, the movie went on to win Best Film at the Irish Film & Television Awards in 2017.

Tonight’s screening is the movie’s Irish TV premiere and marks the first night of Virgin Media Three (previously b3) after the recent TV3 revamp. A Date For Mad Mary gets underway on the channel at 9.30pm and you can check out the trailer below.
