After a huge search involving over 1,500 applicants, Kildare teenager Charlie Reid has landed a role opposite Oscar winner Olivia Colman in new film Joyride, which begins shooting next month.

We could be looking at Paul Mescal the second here as the 14-year-old hugely impressed Colman and director Emer Reynolds with his “pure, raw talent”. The Favourite star Colman spoke about being blown away by Reid’s audition tapes, saying the young actor has “really got it all… I can’t wait to work with him”.

The two will star alongside each other in the feel good film which follows the story of solicitor Joy who has just given birth but hasn’t taken to motherhood, and hopes her friend will adopt the baby. In an unlikely turn of events she befriends 12 year old Mully (played by Reid) who’s on the run from his conman dad and in need of a mother figure himself.

Reid’s real-life dad Dominic spoke to The Guardian about his son’s joy after landing the role – “He’s just thrilled. As a parent, to see your 14-year-old smile from ear to ear is pretty incredible”.

Before the pandemic, Reid had been a regular performer with local theatre groups, and had dreams of a professional career. Looks like his dream has come true, as director Reynolds predicts this role will be the start of an incredible acting journey for the 14 year old.

If you fancy yourself as a bit of an actor, the film is shooting in Kerry next month and they’re looking for extras now! So you might get your moment in the spotlight too.
